Expanding Access to Food
How we’re uplifting local comunities by creating access to real food
Our impact work is rooted in a passion for building healthier communities by making nutritous food more accessible.
For every bowl sold on opening day during each new restaurant opening, we donate a bowl to a local food access partner to support families. We also provide meals to fuel local grassroots efforts seeking to create racial equity and sustainable change.
Every community is unique and we partner with community-based organizations to affect change at the local level. We support programs to match SNAP dollars at local farmers markets, have helped to establish mobile markets to bring fresh produce closer for underserved communities, and helped to transform a Black-owned family corner store in South LA, Hank’s Mini Market, into a community space with healthy food options.
In 2010, we started sweetgreen in schools, a curriculum for educators to teach kids on food and sustainability – impacting over 9,000 students to date. In 2019, we began a partnership with FoodCorps for its second phase. Together, we’ve piloted new ways for students to experiment with food and reimagine their lunchrooms. Our culinary team also contributed to FoodCorps’ recipes and engaged with their service members at orientation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we dedicated our Outpost program to deliver free meals to our healthcare heroes. In response to overwhelming support, we created the Impact Outpost Fund with Chef Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen to scale our efforts to more hospitals – while supporting our team members with much-needed work hours and our farmers. From April to August 2020, we donated nearly 400,000 meals to over 400 hospitals across the country.
